A bit of innovative tweaking has transformed otherwise pedestrian features into an intriguing gameplay experience.
An indicator to the left of the reels displayed the multiplier that would be applied once I triggered free spins. The multiplier started at 1x, with a maximum of 10x, and would advance slightly every time I landed a shield symbol which would then transform into a scatter once it was collected. I had to collect an increasing number of shields per multiplier tier.
Once I landed 3 scatters on the reels on the same spin, I was awarded 10 free spins and the map multiplier applied to all my wins. I was also able to retrigger the feature and gain up to 5 extra free spins for landing 5 shield symbols.
Viking Queen slot borders on minimalistic, but still delivers full-bodied gameplay. I wasn’t moved by the game’s theme and while it is vividly crafted, visually, it offers nothing we haven’t seen from other Nordic-infused titles. Fortunately, the gameplay compensates for this aspect.
The game built tension expertly with the multiplier map that determined just how lucrative the free spins round would be, so I found myself hoping that the bonus round would not trigger too soon to allow me to build up as high a multiplier as possible. This was an entertaining twist that set this title apart from anything I’ve played recently and entering free spins with the top 10x multiplier got me the closest to the game’s top prize of $250 000.
