Canada has three jurisdictions that allow legal betting using the internet. However, the online gambling websites run by government have been finding it tough to compete with the private gambling websites. While the efforts to attract bettors is ongoing, these sites have had limited success. Unfortunately, initial predictions of Ontario's online gambling success has not come to fruition.

Ontario started online betting quite recently, and the provincial government claims that its efforts have paid off. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation forecasted that bringing about much-needed changes in the system will help the province earn an additional sum of C$1.26 billion each year by 2017-2018. However, now the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation has reduced its projections by 30 per cent, claiming that the reforms would bring revenues of merely C$889 million by 2021-22.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation has been on the receiving end due to this mess. The province’s auditor general has criticized the agency for its forecasts for PlayOLG.ca, claiming that the projected financial target was not in sync with the results that the site yielded.

Playoff. car was launched in January 2015 and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation expected to earn a profit of about C$100 million from the 2015-16. However, they earned just C$15 million.

The Corporation has projected that its earnings from their online casino offering will be approximately C$25 million even though it has plans to introduce its mobile casino app in March 2017. The Ontario auditor general has pointed out that even the reduced earnings may have been overstated by the Corporation.

The auditor general believes that the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation may have under-estimated the impact the grey gambling market has on the province’s online gambling industry.

In the meantime, the Corporation is looking for advice to develop a new player platform so that it can improve the way the site communicates and connects with players. It believes that the new platform will boost its digital presence by improving certain areas of operations, such as player registration, player accounts and controls for responsible gambling.
