Two Siblings from northern Alberta thought they were the subjects of an elaborate prank when they found out they won $1 million earlier in December.

David and his sister, Betty Holst, are sharing a $1million jackpot prize thanks to their LOTTO 6/49 ticket that won the Guaranteed Prize Draw number for Nov. 4.

“I thought it was April Fool’s, but it wasn’t April! We’ve never won before. We don’t know what we’ll do with it,” David said.

The pair hail from Boyle, Alberta, but bought their ticket at a Petro Canada in Athabasca. They collected the ticket on the morning of the draw and Betty was first to learn of their win the next day after scanning the ticket on the Lotto Spot! app.

“I thought somebody was playing a joke,” Betty said when she heard the news.

Both David and Betty double-checked the results on their phones to be sure, taking the extra step of calling the number on the ticket to confirm that it was the real deal.

“We were kind of in denial,” David said. “I didn’t tell a soul and just went to work like any other day.”

The brother and sister are still mulling over how to spend their new fortune. Betty intends to save some of it and eventually travel once it is safe to do so. The pair might also jointly purchase a retirement property “somewhere warm” once the COVID-19 pandemic has abated.

Boyle is around 140 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
