The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) recently oversaw the scheduled allocations of gaming revenue generated by the province’s casinos, to host communities. These allocations occur at the close of every fiscal quarter and Niagara Falls was one of this year’s first recipients, with a 3rd quarter allocation of $3.8 million.

The existence of a casino in a municipality is widely considered to be beneficial to the development of the area as they receive contributions from gaming revenues. Evidence of this funding can often be seen in beautification efforts, as well as large and small-scale community projects.

The leading municipality in terms of casino revenue allocations is Niagara Falls which benefits from playing host to Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara. The regular payments are determined by a prescribed formula that is applied across all casino operations within a province.

Finance Minister, Peter Bethlenfalvy, stated that the Municipality Contribution Agreement makes the allocations possible and that he was satisfied with the process.

Both casinos in Niagara Falls are currently closed until at least January 26 due to government restrictions. Since 1996, the municipality has been awarded a sum of $172 million from gaming revenue, excluding tax.

Benefits for All

Sault Ste. Marie is also in line for a casino cash injection. The tourist haven has been granted $273,611 for the third quarter of 2022 thanks to Gateway Casinos Sault Ste. Marie that draws hordes of visitors, including locals and those from neighbouring municipalities. Ross Romano, the MPP for Sault Ste. Marie explained that the community is grateful for the employment generated by the venue, as well as its economic contributions which come to a total of $32.3 million.

Another fortunate recipient is the City of Belleville which earned $557 505, courtesy of Shorelines Casino, a relatively new operation that has been giving back to its community since 2017. The daily operations of Elements Casino Flamboro have seen the City of Hamilton claim a total of $94 million in non-tax gaming revenue.
